Although tourmaline was already known in the Mediterranean in ancient times, it was not imported from Sri Lanka to Western Europe until 1703 by the Dutch. They named the new gemstone "Turmali", a Sinhalese word , which means "stone of mixed colors".

And it is precisely this multi-colouredness that is clearly visible in this beautiful necklace.
